The Founding of Quel’Thalas

08/09/2012 / Comments Off

The high elves, led by Dath’Remar, left Kalimdor behind them and challenged the storms of the Maelstrom. Their fleets wandered the

wreckage of the world for many long years, and they discovered mysteries and lost kingdoms along their sojourn. Dath’Remar, who

had taken the name Sunstrider (or “he who walks the day”), sought out places of considerable ley power upon which to build a

new homeland for his people. His fleet finally landed on the beaches of the kingdom men would later call Lordaeron. Forging inland,

the high elves founded a settlement within the tranquil Tirisfal Glades. After a few years, many of them began to go mad.

It was theorized that something evil slept beneath that particular part of the world, but the rumors were never proven to be true.

The high elves packed up their encampment and moved northward towards another land rich with energies. As the high elves

crossed the rugged, mountainous lands of Lordaeron, their journey became more perilous. Since they were effectively cut off from

the lifegiving energies of the Well of Eternity, many of them fell ill from the frigid climate or died from starvation. The most disconcerting

change, however, was the fact that they were no longer immortal or immune to the elements. They also shrank somewhat in height,

and their skin lost its characteristic violet hue.

Despite their hardships, they encountered many wondrous creatures that had never been seen in Kalimdor. They also found tribes of primitive

humans who hunted throughout the ancient forestlands. However, the direst threat they encountered were the voracious and cunning forest

trolls of Zul’Aman. These mossskinned trolls could regenerate lost limbs and heal grievous physical injuries, but they proved to be a barbaric,

evil race. The Amani empire stretched across most of northern Lordaeron, and the trolls fought hard to keep unwanted strangers from their borders.

The elves developed a deep loathing for the vicious trolls and killed them on sight whenever they were encountered.

Anticipation for Diablo 3

08/06/2012 / Comments Off

A crowd of more than 1,500 gathered Monday night around a stage built underneath the Ferris wheel at theIrvineSpectrumCenter, a shopping center located about a mile from developer Blizzard Entertainment Inc.’s headquarters, for the gritty role-playing sequel set in the fantastical world of Sanctuary. Anticipation for “Diablo III” from publisher Activision Blizzard Inc. has bubbled over because the previous entry in the series was released 12 years ago, a lifetime in the gaming world when compared with franchises like “World of Warcraft” and “Call of Duty,” which regularly receive updates.

“When we first started doing midnight launches, we didn’t think anyone would come, but now we do them for all our games, and they get bigger and bigger,” said Rob Pardo, Blizzard’s vice president of game design. “It’s great for not only the fans but also the development team. They get to be here when everyone is buying the game and see the excitement. “”Diablo” fans huddled around the stage to watch Blizzard artists sketch characters from scratch, view never-before-seen footage, take part in trivia contests and attempt to catch free swag during “loot storms.”Wilsonhopes new sprawling battlefields, real-money auctions, a deeper combat system and increased online capabilities for “Diablo III” will appease even the frustrated fans.

Ian Noble, 24, wanted his collector’s edition autographed by developers. “There’s nowhere I’d rather be tonight,” Noble said. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long, long time.” So why did it take so long? “We were just goofing off mostly,” joked lead designer Jay Wilson over howls from the crowd. “No, it takes a long time to make a Blizzard game. We’re very focused on quality. If we think something is not good enough, we make it better. We redo things, which is really uncommon in game development. If we build a level and don’t like (it), we’ll throw it out.” In the third chapter of “Diablo,” players choose among five classes — barbarian, demon hunter, monk, witch doctor or wizard — and battle hellish minions across the landscape of Sanctuary.

Not only will the start points be permanent additions to the map

08/04/2012 / Comments Off

In August 2011, we revamped theTempleTrekkingminigame and we were really pleased with the results. This month, we bring you…the Fish Flingers rework! For those of you who don’t know what Fish Flingers is, it’s a great little player-skill-based D&D, suitable for all levels, where you and other players compete to become the greatest fisherman of all time…well, until the beginning of the next game, anyway. The reworks first job will be to dramatically increase accessibility so that it’s easier to get to Fish Flingers games between bouts of ’normal‘ fishing. Not only will the start points be permanent additions to the map, but we’ll add more of them to popular fishing areas throughout the game. Competitions will also be far more frequent, running every 20 minutes, and you’ll be able to claim 2 tickets per day rather than just 10 per week.

We’re adding a new ‘big fish‘ feature to the game, too. Players will have to cooperate with each other to land these whoppers, but the XP rewards will make the extra effort worthwhile for all. So, get involved, and don’t be koi! You don’t want to be the cod one out. We will also completely overhaul the nature (and size) of the potential rewards. The Fishing XP will be tweaked to reward fishers who find the best tackle combinations available. You’ll also be able to earn a brand new set of fishing gear, similar to the lumberjack outfit and the golden mining gear. Each piece will improve all your earned Fishing XP while worn. We’ve also changed the tackle box reward to allow you to store raw fish, and are implementing a host of other cool features too.

Yelps is also getting involved with this update, as he temporarily renames his home ’The Squeal of Neptune’, giving you a chance to catch some brand-new cosmetic fish-themed attire! The Crucible – The Return of Bounty Hunter (Members Only) Back in 2011, we removed the “Bounty” mechanic. For many of you, it was a style of PK you preferred to the traditional Wilderness, and we promised we would bring it back. Well, it’s back! And this time, it is better than ever.

Right royal costumes on the squeal of fortune

08/04/2012 / Comments Off

As Mad May draws to a close, we bid a fond farewell to spring by adding two exciting new costumes to the Squeal of Fortune. Not only do they look great, but they also represent something of a first for cosmetic items. Starting with our content update today, on Tuesday 29th May, and running throughout the summer months, two impressive new clothing sets will be obtainable as unique prizes on the Squeal of Fortune. There are five pieces of clothing for each of the two must-have sets, so you’ll need to be feeling lucky in order to bag all ten. Don’t forget, the more spins you have at your disposal, the better your chances are of snagging all the items – and getting all of them is certainly something you will want to do!

Taking a space on the uncommon slots, the first outfit is the Queen’s Guard uniform: perfect attire for kick-starting a summer of regal rejoicing. The full set encompasses a Queen’s Guard hat, shirt, trousers, shoes and staff. It is everything a stalwart defender of royalty might need to perform their duties admirably. Resting on selected rare slots, the second outfit is altogether more exotic and mysterious, a set of Dragon Ceremonial clothes. Made in honour of the Queen Black Dragon, this elusive set consists of a Dragon Ceremonial Hat, Breastplate, Greaves, Boots andCape. We’re sure you’ll agree, they look as formidable as they do beautiful!

And, as if that was not cool enough, when you complete a costume, not only will you look awesome, but you will also be given the option to re-colour the outfits once equipped! Re-colouring is a first for cosmetic items of this nature, and it’s a big reason we think that these outfits will be so desirable. As there are 10 cosmetic items in total up for grabs, we are also pleased to announce that you’ll no longer need to worry about winning the same unique cosmetic item more than once. If you are fortunate enough to snag one of these items, it will always be one you don’t have yet.

Blizzard Explains Diablo 3 72-Hour Lockdown

08/01/2012 / Comments Off

Blizzard explains why consumers of the digital version of Diablo 3 are locked to the Starter Edition for 72 hours.ZoomBlizzard released a lengthy explanation for the 72-hour lockdown for the digital version of Diablo 3 on Friday, blaming the restriction on possible credit card fraud. On Thursday Blizzard originally stated that as of patch v1.0.3, consumers who purchase the digital version of Diablo 3 — either through the online store or Battle.net — would be restricted to the Starter Edition for the first 72 hours. This means players can only play in Act I up to the Skeleton King, and they can only level up a character to 13. Matchmaking is available but only with other Starter Edition players, both auction houses are closed off, and Global Play is unavailable.

But hey, Blizzard thanks you for the $60 purchase nonetheless.”Outside of the issue that we fixed, digital purchases do require a review period before they kick over from Starter to Full editions,” a Blizzard support agent posted. “We apologize for the inconvenience, but it is a necessary step to combat fraud and other malicious activities that can weaken everyone’s play experience. The delay is no longer than three days, and is often much quicker than that. Hang tight.”Apparently here’s what Blizzard doesn’t want to see: gamers purchasing the digital copy and blowing through the game before the company discovers that a fraudulent credit card has been used, or the funds somehow become unavailable before the transaction closes. In fact, Blizzard makes this somewhat perfectly clear in Friday’s lengthy explanation to Kotaku.

For security reasons and to help ensure the integrity of the game and auction house service, players who purchase the digital version of Diablo 3 may have to wait until payment verification is complete before they can access certain game features. (See below for a full list of restrictions associated with digital purchases). While most payments are approved and restrictions are lifted within a day, in some cases it can take up to 72 hours to complete this process.Similar to World of Warcraft, these restrictions were put in place to deter credit card fraud, which in turn helps reduce gold spam and other harmful activities that can have a negative impact on the game experience for everyone.
