Planet Calypso Sold for $6 Million USD

SEE Virtual Worlds has announced its purchase of the first planet in the Entropia Universe, Planet Calypso. Planet Calypso was purchased for a record six million U.S. dollars. The planet has been running since 2003 and has nearly a million registered users and has generated over four million U.S. dollars in player transaction revenue.

The acquisition follows news late last year that SEE Virtual Worlds plans to rollout new planets in the Entropia Universe, beginning with Planet Michael™, a game being developed with the support and involvement of the Michael Jackson Estate, and a Universal Monsters world featuring Van Helsing and Universal Studios’ legendary line of cinematic monsters. Guild Wars 2 features five different sPvPmaps,

For those new to the PvP scene in ArenaNet’s game, Guild Wars 2 features five different sPvPmaps, including Battle of Kyhlo, Forest of Niflhel, Legacy of the Foefire, Raid on the Capricorn, and Temple of the Silent Storm.  All of the scenarios are conquest-based, meaning that in addition to earning points for taking out players on the opposing team, your team will find its success by capturing, controlling and defending particular objectives on the map.  The scenarios are all also informed by Guild Wars 2′s larger fiction and narrative, and each of hemincorporates secondary mechanics that mix up the action by adding new gameplay dynamics.

The newest scenario, Temple of the Silent Storm, for example, adds the ability for players to commune with different “meditation” points around the map, earning buffs like Meditation of Ferocity, Meditation of Stillness, and Meditation of Tranquility.  Meditation of Ferocity gives a +3 bonus to team points when a player earns a kill, while Meditation of Stillness makes captured objectives grant double points, and Mediation of Tranquility, only appearing once per scenario, captures all objectives simultaneously.  Like the other sPvP scenarios, Temple of the Silent Storm offers fast-paced combat with an incentive to work with your teammates to capture objectives, and the map provides for a lot of vertical spaces and nooks and crannies from which to attack or hide from opponents.

Guild Wars 2 vs TERA

Combat

This is TERA’s big win, yes even with animation lock (which prevents the hacking and whatnot we saw in DCUO, by the way).  GW2’s combat is still a ton of fun, don’t get me wrong. It tweaks the standard tab-target stuff enough to make it far more interesting than in games like WoW or EQ2.  Plus the dodge, once you learn its importance, is a brilliant feature to make combat seem more active.  But that doesn’t stop TERA’s “True Action Combat” from pretty much making all other MMOs’ combat seem infantile.  There are other games trying it on the horizon (Raiderz stands out and is F2P).  But TERA really does have an ace up their sleeve, and with more diverse content in the future, and a focus on PVP, I can see En Masse’s game earning and keeping a large hardcore crowd of gamers with a lust for player versus player.  Seriously, once you find your class, the combat in TERA is light-years ahead of anything else on the market.  GW2 is good at it, but TERA is better.

Bill’s Conlusion

Ultimately, I’ll be playing TERA for the next several months at least.  I look forward to Diablo 3, and I really am excited about The Secret World as well.  I’m a gamer, I’ll play everything.  But TERA’s got its hooks in me for now.  In fact, I actually think TERA might be more fun for me than SWTOR ever was. I wonder though just how long it will last.  What will the end-game hold? And more than that, will I be playingany other game when Guild Wars 2 launches? Both TERA and ANet’s game have their upsides.  Just as SWTOR had its own benefits when this same argument sprouted around the time of BioWare’s launch.

But for what it’s worth, if you’re asking me my own opinion? I’ve not had the feeling Guild Wars 2 gave me in an MMO for over seven years.  It made me remember that these games are about the world and the people, and about exploration.  Not just about levels and gear.  I can’t wait for that feeling to be permanent when GW2 launches. TERA really is a good game. But for my own tastes, I think Guild Wars 2 is ultimately the better product.

LUKE’S INTERNAL BATTLE

After months of waiting, this weekend marked my first moments of playtime with the hugely anticipatedGuild Wars 2.  After waiting so long, the only word that accurately sums up how I felt over the past few days is…underwhelmed.  Not overly so, but enough to make me take stock of why I feel this way.  After a post-mortem with some guild mates, we came up with a radical conclusion: I’ve been playing too muchTERA.  While I fully intend to play both games, the past weekend has got me thinking about how the two compare, and now I plan to share my conclusions with you, gentle readers.

Class Progression

The way your class develops in Guild Wars 2 through having different weapons offer different skills offers brilliant customisation.  The first character I made was a Charr engineer, and I found much of my first hour consumed with trying to track down as many different weapons as I could.  From very early in my playtime I was able to refine my playstyle to what worked best for me, and that’s really quite special.

TERA has nowhere near the same level of class customisation on offer.  Your class is pretty much shackled in terms of how it operates, all the way down to the weapons it uses which could quickly become repetitive.  What makes up for this is the vast difference in play experiences between classes.  In a game with an emphasis on action combat, the speed and range of attacks take on a much more important meaning, which in turn makes picking the right class for your style a big task.  Sure, it can’t be refined to the degree present in Guild Wars 2, but that’s not to say there aren’t options there.

Quests and Adventure

Once again on this front, Guild Wars 2 triumphs, though I’m dubious how much this matters.  The dynamic event questing system is brilliant…the first time you encounter an event.  As I found myself after staying in the same area too long, doing the same event 3 or even 4 times causes the veneer of this shifting world to crack.  Events moving back and forth do make the world feel vibrant but also cause your actions to appear futile.  Whilst I’d never claim TERA does anything but recycle the tired MMO norm of “kill X rats” or escort quests, neither does Guild Wars 2 once you take away the manner in which they’re delivered to you.  So what it all really came down to for me was…

Combat

Pretty much 80% if not more of my time in both games thus far has been spent in combat.  Whether I’m doing quests or just exploring, mobs are constantly trying to kill me.  As a result, it doesn’t matter to me what I have to do or what my objective is but rather how I go about doing this.  On this front Guild Wars 2felt similar to every MMO I’ve played in the last decade at the basic gameplay level.  It’s more refined in many aspects but it’s not revolutionary by any means.  That’s not to say TERA is, but I certainly find its combat to be less overused and a welcome change.

Both games shift towards action combat through things like dodging, though TERA places far more emphasis on this.  My problem was, coming to my Charr after 5 days on my Castanic, I felt like I was moving in molasses.  Everything seemed slower, and I wasn’t plagued by framerate issues like many others.  Dodging seemed to be a token gesture in Guild Wars 2; monsters swiftly caught up with me when I ran out of stamina after 3 jumps.  Because of this, the difficulty of monsters seemed punishing; if I mess up a dodge in TERA and lose a chunk of life, it’s my own fault, but even doing things perfectly in Guild Wars 2 can swiftly see my health pool depleted.

How to gain experience in Runescape

You gain experience from crafting them, and can craft multiple amounts such as two times the amount of essence you have when you gain levels. You need to go to an altar such as the air altar (for air runes) to craft them. Crafting – This skill can come in very handy, but a lot of people don’t seem to realize this. You can use this skill to make everything else you can’t make by smithing. This includes some amour, but also jeweler, items and lots more. You can also cut certain gems by having a high enough crafting level.

If you decide to pay to play, there are many more skills you can gain levels in such as Herblore, Agility, Fletching, Construction and many more. All these skills can become very useful and provide more to do and work on. These are just like missions in any other games. You can start them at certain places depending on which quest you want to do. Some quests require certain skills in order to even try them, but some just require a good enough combat level to do them. However, not all the quests involve fighting enemies! A lot of the quests just depend on you to past messages on, help out people and make Runescape a better place! There are a variety of free quests to do, however there are many, many more quests on pay to play. These are shown on the world map by a certain symbol, so just look out for them.

When you complete a quest in Runescape, you gain an amour of quest points, and maybe something else such as experience in a certain skill or money or an item. Quest points are also one of the things that may be required to begin a quest – you may need a certain amount of them. I’m not saying the fight is disappointing with any of the dragons

I’m not saying the fight is disappointing with any of the dragons.  I just feel the dragons should act more aggressively.  The game with the best dragon combat, for me, was Skyrim.  I know it’s not an MMO, and I know that its combat is very different.  But when a dragon takes to the skies and bombards me with fire and ice, I feel threatened.  While playing during the first press betas, I talked with some of the developers who also enjoyed Skyrim.  I’m not saying they need to do exactly what they saw there, but maybe expand upon those ideas.

The main reason I feel that this is an issue, is that ArenaNet has done a lot to make their MMO feel more like an action game.  The fights against lesser opponents have that action like feel with dodging.   But fighting against a dragon feels more like a more traditional MMO.  It breaks the flow the rest of the game tries to establish.

Now Dragons aren’t the only ones with this problem.  I feel giants also suffer.  A giant can take out half a group of people with one mighty blow, so I feel they translated its strength properly, but it follows a pattern with its attacks.  Giants also have a very limited number of attacks, so memorizing all of them is actually pretty easy.  I would love for the Giants to be revisited, and maybe gain a few more attacks.  I think it would be awesome to see a giant swing a dead tree round, or maybe picking up players and throwing them!

I loved the Karka from The Lost Shores event.  They looked like living chunks of coral reef, and had some awesome and unique attacks.  The best part is that they were big!  I felt ArenaNet did a great job with these enemies.  They moved around a lot, and could pose a threat to a group of players.  Well, except the Ancient Karka.  I think a champion was tougher to take down, and made for a more exciting battle.   Oh well, you can’t get everything you want.  At least not yet.

Five Things to Look for at Gamescom

Gamescom kicks off this week in Cologne, Germany. As with other summer conventions, lots of new things should be coming out of the show. We’ve got a few thoughts about things we hope to hear more about over the course of the week. Read on!

Here in the states we have E3, PAX, and GDC. Take all 3 of those shows, role them into one giant German schnitzle and you get Gamescom. One of the biggest conventions on the planet for video games and something Europe thrives on. The convention used to be held in former Eastern Block city of Leipzig, but for the last few years is hosted in the west side of Germany’s city of Cologne. The show is massive and fans, business folks, major publishers, and yes even Blizzard attend in full force. So with Gamescom kicking off this week we thought it would make sense to go through the top five things to look for at Gamescom this summer.
