Do you miss challenging gameplay? Skill-based gameplay? Rewarding gameplay? Are you longing to get excited about an MMO again? Louder—we can’t hear you! You should be shouting at your monitor, “Hell, yes!”

Welcome to the MMO-FO movement. We reject boring, easy-mode, childish MMORPGs. We hate no-skill tab targeting, repetitive attack rotations, and mindless grinding. We want a game that requires player skill, a game that rewards mastery, and a game that actually challenges us. That game is TERA.

To celebrate the of this innovative game, En Masse Entertainment is debuting a new series of videos throughout the closed beta period. This video series, starring mixed martial arts legend Bas Rutten, brings the concept of action combat to life as only Bas can. To get you started on the road to being an MMO-FO, watch our first video right here:

We will be hosting five closed beta tests for TERA starting February 10, each lasting about 60 hours from Friday at 12:00 PM PST to Sunday at 11:59 PM PST of that week. Those who have have a chance to be randomly selected to participate in single events. Players who will gain access to all five closed beta tests and be allowed to retain their characters and their progress for the duration of the closed beta period.

TERA‘s open beta test starting on Thursday, April 19, will be open to all who sign up. Finally, the Head Start is an event exclusively for players who , taking place the weekend before TERA‘s launch on May 1. There will be no non-disclosure agreement (NDA) during any of these events so feel free to screenshot, film, and write about your experiences and share them with your friends and guildmates!

We’ve announced TERA‘s in North America, launched the page, and started a for your chance at all-access beta invitations… what’s next? How about a peek at our TERA beta plans!

Last week, we mentioned invitation giveaways as an upcoming, additional way to get into TERA‘s closed beta tests. We’ll be working with major game industry press sites and key MMO news outlets as part of our beta test schedule. To kick things off, we are proud to announce IGN as our first closed beta partner. There will be plenty of opportunities for the TERA community to get involved and play TERA before the game launches on May 1. We’ll announce our beta test schedule and more details on partners and giveaways in the coming weeks.

Did you sign up to be a potential TERA beta tester on? Check your email! We’ve distributed invitations containing beta codes to 1000 lucky recipients. If you received an email, follow the directions enclosed to download and install the beta client. We’ve also sent invitations to every TERA fan who participated in a previous test event or won one of our contests.

If you didn’t receive an invitation, you can make your own luck by pre-ordering TERAfrom the En Masse store. This will grant you access to every beta test and you’ll be able to download the beta client immediately.

We’re proud to announce that TERA is on the En Masse Entertainment store! Pre-ordering will grant access to all of TERA‘s five closed beta tests and allow players to retain their characters and their progress for the duration of the closed beta period from February to April. Pre-ordering from the also rewards players with the White Stallion, a unique mount, in addition to a level 10 City Wheel Earring, a level 35 Seren’s Sand Ring, the ability to create a character and reserve its name before launch, and access to the exclusive Head Start play period over the weekend prior to TERA‘s launch on May 1.

In addition to a standard edition, TERA will be available in two collector’s editions as well —a traditional boxed edition and a digital download. Both will grant players unique in-game items, including the Regal Frostlion Mount for in-game mounted travel, and two equippable items: the level 15 Velik’s Bloodstone Necklace and the level 40 Shakan’s Bloodstone Necklace.

Available in limited quantities, the physical Limited Collector’s Edition will include collectable items such as a Letter of Marque, a canvas world map, a field guide, a Valkyon Federation-issued compass, and a game soundtrack. All versions of TERA include 30 days of game time. Also, players who subscribe to TERA for three, six, or twelve month intervals will receive inaugural pricing. These reduced rates won’t be available after May 1 when subscriptions begin so lock yours in before it’s too late!

First Closed Beta Test– Recapping TERA’s Successful

We’re pleased to share details regarding the first of TERA’s five closed beta tests! The weekend started with the En Masse team spending Friday evening in the office watching the world of TERA come to life as This being the first large-scale test of the game, though, the weekend was not without some hiccups. We experienced a few crashes while settling our platform and game configurations. In addition, players worked together and formed virtual lines to kill the evil Vekas. Such queuing was not ideal or intentional, but did serve as a good lesson for us as publishers and developers. When thousands of players collide, the unexpected happens. These are the elements that make MMOs so great and yet so challenging to develop and perfect. The En Masse team learned a great deal from CBT1 and will put those lessons to good use as we ramp up for CBT2.

players began to appear in-game. The team was delighted to see players come into the game and instantly start swinging their weapons wildly. Right off the bat, expectations for an MMO were shattered as players found that clicking their mouse didn’t activate some interface element or start a cooldown timer, but instead fired off the slash of a sword or a bolt of energy.

Players were given the opportunity to explore the game’s opening sequence, the Island of Dawn. They dove into play, learned their skills, and jumped into TERA’s action-packed combat. They battled monsters and demons while searching for clues about the fate of the federation’s greatest hero. After conquering the island’s challenges, they forged ahead to Arcadia, where they helped broker a fragile peace with the faeries, uncovered the existence of the secretive Scions of Lok—to say nothing of their ties to the deva bandits in Oblivion Woods—and rendered aid to the embattled soldiers in the Valley of Titans, fighting off the Gutrend kulkari tribe. Their investigation continued as they followed clues about a secret base in Oblivion Woods, where they learned the truth: the Scions of Lok planned to wrest control of Arcadia from the Valkyon Federation. The cult’s plans didn’t end there, though, and the Scions launched an assault on the last federation outpost in the Celestial Hills—one narrowly defeated by our heroes.

Here are two points that stood out from CBT1:

  • The female castanic warrior was the most popular race and class combination. It seems the leading lady from TERA‘s box art had an influence!
  • In Oblivion Woods, players encountered their first big-ass monster, or BAM, a basilisk. The basilisk accounted for nearly two-thirds of all deaths during the course of the beta test, and is certainly telling of the unique challenge BAMs present to players, as well as the challenges presented by TERA‘s unique skill-based combat system.

This weekend was a big success both in terms of players getting hands-on time with TERA and for showing the team what they need to refine before the game’s May 1 release. Everyone is excited for the next test over the weekend of February 24-26, and will expand on the first closed beta test by opening up a PvP server and adding five more levels to explore. Be on the lookout for great—and evil—things around the corner. The entire En Masse team looks forward to seeing the world of TERA come alive once again.

The Dungeon Guide is going to be an in-depth walkthrough of each instance. We won’t spoil the fun of figuring out the dungeons right away, so we’ll time the release of each one carefully. If you need help getting through a dungeon—or getting through a dungeon more efficiently—well, now you know where to look.

In time, we’ll expand both of these guides with more tips, more systems, and more dungeons.

Hail! After emerging from your 60-hour TERA bender, you may have noticed that we added two new sections to the website: . We wanted to give these new sections some love in our news because they are important features that will help you get into the action quickly—or get you out of a tight spot.

The goal of the Veteran’s Guide is to be the TL;DR version of things you don’t want to miss in TERA. Struggling through walls of text to find out about a new MMO can be frustrating. Instead, we rely on forum posts by experienced beta testers to get the quick and dirty on need-to-know features. That is what we’ve created with the Veteran’s Guide. In fact, the guy who wrote most of the Veteran’s Guide has logged more TERA hours than anyone else in the office—ten times over.

“Massive” is the defining element of an MMO. It is by far the best part of the genre and what makes an MMO so engaging. It is also what makes designing an MMO so damn hard. When thousands of players converge on your world, your design is put to the test. During this last closed beta test, the quest to destroy the rampaging ghilliedhu, Vekas, ran into a big fail. The issue here was a bottleneck when thousands of players all needed to kill the same guy. This is a rare issue that will only occur when we launch a new server. Once the population spreads out, things will go back to normal. For our betas and through the first few weeks of launch we will be having three Vekases spawn on a shorter interval. This should alleviate the burden and get users moving on. Our fix isn’t elegant, but it gets the job done for the short term while we enhance our systems for a long term fix.

As for the , I am quite happy with our changes. Immediately after the first closed beta test, we sat down with the dedicated western design team and went through our critical and major issues. We were able to identify, schedule, fix, QA, and deploy a new patch within two weeks to address this market’s specific feedback. How sweet is that? I’ve been working on titles from east to west for a long time and have never seen dedication and turnaround time like this for an east–to-west product.

The closed beta tests are the perfect opportunity for En Masse and Bluehole to get this community feedback-to-patch cycle down to an exact science. So, please keep up your feedback and we’ll keep up the patches.

I Am going to Play,but the Store Won’t Let Me to!

Boy oh boy, it seems like trouble comes knocking just when things most need to go right. Closed beta event #2 starts in just a couple of hours (Friday, February 24 at noon PST), and our online store won’t finalize purchases of TERA to player accounts—what gives?!?

Our ecommerce (online store) provider had a massive systems failure on Thursday afternoon. The failure affected not only En Masse, but all of their customers, including some of the largest game companies in the game biz. There was a failure in a “storage array” (a whole pile of hard drives) that they’re working to correct now.

Our online store allows purchases of TERA, but the provider’s backend systems that “commit” purchases to the En Masse account system (as well as the account systems of all their customers) is hosed (that’s a technical term we use around here when we can’t use four-letter words).

Now please don’t blame the vendor—they have extensive disaster recovery systems and practice system failovers from time to time, but sometimes systems fail in new and complicated ways that prevent easy fixes. We know they’re doing their best to fix these problems.

So here’s what we’re going to do: we’re monitoring our purchase logs to detect when players purchase TERA, and we’ll batch these up every two hours and email those players a game code to play TERA. It will be a “trial code” that enables you to get in and play this weekend. When the online store problems are sorted out, you will be automatically upgraded to the full account you purchased (standard edition or collector’s edition), never fear.

We are sorry this problem is affecting you and your gaming friends. We’d like nothing more than to get you right into TERA without this additional hassle. If you’ve made a purchase and haven’t received your game code yet, please be patient. Give us a few hours after the purchase to get the emails sent out; this is a manual process and is a bit time-consuming. If you haven’t heard from us in, say, six hours, contact our Customer Support team and they’ll ensure your account is fixed.

In the event that you’ve accidentally purchased more than one copy of the game in attempt to force the store to add TERA to your account, we will of course give you a full refund for any and all copies you’d like to return. One brave soul purchased 13 copies in an attempt to get his account activated; there’s no need to do this yourself!

Again, we apologize for the problems, and hope you’ll bear with us through the mess. And we look forward to seeing you battling monsters during the closed beta event this weekend, even if we have to sacrifice a thousand tuwangis to make it happen!

Live is the TERA Store!

Many of you — our earliest-adopter fans — experienced problems with our online store in the last 24 hours, for which we are sorry. If you read our you will have learned that a mission-critical ecommerce system failed and the backup system didn’t come online — not exactly the most shining moment for our young company. This problem not only knocked out our store, but those of several other major game companies too, since we all utilize the same e-commerce provider for our online storefronts. Bad news!

The good news is that these systems are now back online after the provider’s largest response effort in six years, and in the event you’d like to take the plunge, it is possible to use the online store to get TERA just in time for this weekend’s second closed beta test event.

If you purchased TERA during the (awful, terrible, apocalyptic) last 24 hours, your account has not yet been updated to reflect your recent purchase. Again, we’re really sorry about that. In order to ensure that you can get into the second closed beta test, we’ve emailed a trial game code to each of you that you can manually apply to your En Masse account so you’ll have access this weekend. And in the near future we’ll update your account with a full game code so that you can play in other TERA events.

If you’ve visited our forums lately, you were bound to see a thread requesting roleplay support. We’ve been listening to the roleplay community and are excited to announce that we will be providing a PvE roleplay server named “Celestial Hills” for early character creation and open beta. If we need additional roleplay servers as we move to open beta and eventually launch, we’ll add them as necessary.

And some commonly asked questions regarding the level of support En Masse plans to provide relating to the rules for acceptable roleplay names and behavior. We know that roleplayers have strong feelings about roleplay rules, and that those rules are complicated to administer fairly and uniformly, so we welcome your constructive feedback on our draft proposal.

An MMO launch is a very hectic time—the perfect storm of new players, servers, account management systems, and more means that even the oversized support team we’ve built may have challenges keeping up with demand. Our support staff wants nothing more than to ensure the best overall experience to all our players. Consequently, we will not be handling roleplaying “name review” requests for the first 60 days after launch. Once the launch frenzy has died down, we will increase our support for this aspect of the roleplaying server.

We hope that a roleplay server and our active support of roleplaying—both with game features and customer support—will give you everything you need to enjoy your TERA experience.

Closed the Beta Test 2

Howdy all!

In Closed Beta Test 2, the biggest new addition was probably our player-versus-player introduction. We opened two new PvP servers with an open-world PvP design (short of safety zones in cities). This combined with a guild-versus-guild declaration system made for an interesting weekend! To sum it up, the PvP players REALLY like killing each other. Across our two PvP servers, players racked up over 50,000 kills and over 150,000 PvP battles. We’ve also seen the formation of roughly 2,000 guilds, and the result was a ton of GvG battles.

As we gear up for Closed Beta Test 3 coming we want to look back at the previous event and see what went well, what could use some tweaking, and what you as players enjoyed.

I will say it wasn’t just the players having fun with the PvP. A few of us in the office formed a guild on one of the PvP servers and wanted to try out the GvG (it’s a little more fun with several thousand people than with our small office). We picked our target—a seemingly small guild—and our guild master declared on them. Right after that, we got a message that someone spotted a few of the rival guild at a specific local and we bolted down there to get our PK on.

Alas, they were gone by the time we all gathered up and rode out, so instead we did a bit of questing in the area and MAY have had a few run ins with some other players. So here we are, a small guild engaging in some challenging PvP when all of a sudden, we found the other guild—or more specifically, they found us. All of them. They slaughtered us, but we were all laughing because that’s part of PvP—you never know when you’re going to get it handed to you.

As with any tweaks or changes we make to the game, we want to hear what y’all think about it! We are constantly changing and planning how to make TERA better, and your community advice is key to that, so keep it coming!

Beta Text 3 has been closed

We’ve been listening to you and have some great improvements in place for Closed Beta Test 3. We’ve made some small tweaks to the PvP system based on your feedback. It’s now uncool to kill players six or more levels lower than you, and players who do will receive the red name of shame, with their punishment left up to the community. For the exact details, please see our . Our design goal is to give players the tools to run the PvP server and set a framework that encourages meaningful PvP but doesn’t let asshats ruin it for everyone else.

TERA‘s third closed beta test Before diving into what’s new with the game, we have a heads-up to share.  we’re deploying a new patch for TERA. You won’t be able to patch for about two hours while we integrate it. This isn’t a long-term solution, and we are working on a more seamless experience for future patches. Once we verify the patch was successful, we will open it back up so you can download the 25MB update.

Here are some at-a-glance facts about this weekend’s event:

  • Duration: Friday, March 9 at 11:00 AM PST to Sunday, March 11 at 11:59 PM PST
  • Servers: Arachnaea (PvE), Serpentis Isle (PvE), Valley of Titans (PvP), Jagged Coast (PvP)
  • Maximum Level: 32
  • Character Slots: 2 per server

Note that Closed Beta Test 3 starts an hour earlier that the other events. This is due to Daylight Saving Time starting this weekend and stealing an hour away. We’re giving that hour back to you!

Increasing the level cap to 32 opens up two provinces to explore: the Val Aureum desert lands and the tropical coast of Ostgarath. In addition to discovering the towns of Chebika and Cutthroat Harbor, you’ll be able to venture into Azarel’s Temple, an open dungeon containing small instances. As with any patch we make to the game, we want to hear what y’all think about it! We are constantly changing and planning how to make TERA better, and your community advice is key to that, so please join the discussion about the new patch.

We are hosting five closed beta tests for TERA from February to April, each lasting about 60 hours for a total of 300 hours. The number of servers, the maximum level, and number of available character slots will increase over the course of the events.
